Reviews
Purchased for a gift for son-in-law. He really likes it because it is light weight and really powerful. My husband has one too and agrees. It's alot easier to use because it weights less than regular drills.
This is not a review but a question for customers who has done some research on this item. My Skil drill's two NiCd batteries just died and I am looking for a replacement. For those who had bought this drill, I wonder if this is the lowest priced lithium ion drill on the market...
This drill delivers what it promises. It is fairly light for the power...not especially tiny though...closer to a normal sized drill. It is a good value. A great drill to keep handy for all the chores.

In fact, because it is so capable, you might find yourself rarely reaching for your larger drills.

One negative point. The battery isn't user serviceable. That means that eventually you will have to toss a perfectly good drill when the battery dies. If it is like my other Lithium Ion tools, that shouldn't be a concern for at least half a dozen years....maybe a decade.
I am very impressed with the sc1400. I had been eying the Makita 18v li-ion drive for quite a while now, but just did not want to fork out $200+ for something I would rarely use. I was browsing the tool department at home depot, as I always do when I am there, and saw a nice compact cordless drill I hadn't seen before. I instantly knew this was the drill for me with what seemed to be plenty of power and light weight and less than 1/2 the price the Makita at $90. No regrets here.
Excellent price for performance. Well made , light, and reliable. Good torque and usage between charges. An excellent product for a better than average homeowner.
This Skil Drill/Driver set is very powerful and feels very solid in your hands when you are using it. The battery packs a good amount of power which goes the distance during many projects. Having an extra battery is an added bonus just in case you procrastinate and don't get the job done right away or are easily distracted.
I bought this drill for my husband and he has yet to have any complaints and has used it for several projects since he got it a couple weeks ago.
This is a great buy for me because I am a new home owner and need to get projects done around the house. I knew the 18 volt battery would be too heavy. I considered the 12 volt battery but Consumer Reports rated all the 12 v brands/models as average. The 14 volt is just right because I don't sacrifice power to get a project done faster. It is a little heavy and my slender arm did get tired after 1/2 hour of drilling but by then I was completely done anyways! So, model 2587 has accurate drilling, cordless freedom and better priced than competitive brands that rated as GOOD from Consumer Reports. Sweet deal and investment. I'm sure that the battery life will improve a lot after a few recharges, just like the owner manual says. As a woman, I am more confident about doing a great job on "assembly required projects"!
After searching for a cordless drill, I decided to rely on Consumer Reports review of the Skil 14.4v drill. Although I was unimpressed by the battery life upon first testing the drill, I found the life to improve after a few charges, which I later read in the manual is typical for the first 3-4 charges to be weak. Apparently this is part of the battery design to extend the battery's life. Overall this is a great product for the money with good standard accessories (e.g. bit storage and index and one hour charger).
The guy with the gear problem had it out of gear... it happened to me twice... not quite in gear the chuck wont spin. Smart people know to check.

This is an awesome drill... powerfull and tough. I bought mine 3 years ago and while the batteries needed to be replaced recently, it is still serving me well. I am a Plumber and I use it to drill large holes in stainless steel... speed is not that much of an issue for that but torque is king for cranking large bits. I have used a grinder to make 1/2" bits fit into this drill and it will drill holes in quality stainless steel for hours.

I have used it to grind and wire-brush my front railings... speed is a key factor for that... it stands up to that challenge as well.

It has been dropped many times but it does not care... I could not live without it... if I ever need to replace it (which it seems I will not any time soon) I will get another one just like it. If you are thinking about getting one... stop thinking... get it... you will thank yourself. This drill out performs most drills of twice the cost

I have been using this cordless drill in high productivity furniture manufacturing and all other types of restoration and renovation work for 8 years now. It is the best one available in my opinion.
This driver/drill is powerful enoungh to use all day, every day to install storm doors and windows, and lightweight enough not to wear the user out after an hour or two. It's proven to be a very good purchase.
Excellent drill. I've used it several times and it seems that the battery has just been charged. Very good drill set, I recommend it for anybody who has a need for a new drill set.
I've had Dewalt tools for many years. This tool is plenty powerful for every day home use. For contractors using them more than the home owner, I'd suggest going to the 18V. I have several other tools that use the same 14.4 battery so I stayed with this tool and I really like it. The only thing I would change is it only has room for one bit and it's down by the battery. My old Dewalt had room for two bits and was up by the top rear of the drill. That design was much better if you change bits very much. Otherwise the drill works just fine.
this is a great powerful drill/drive, but, at this price, it is best for pros. overkill for home use.
I've had the drill for several years now and still love it. It has been dropped more times than I can remember and still works. It has great torque and the batteries charge quickly. I liked it so well I bought a second one for my son.
I was disappointed as soon as I saw the cheap plastic drill chuck and the 1.7 amp hour Ni-Cad batteries. When I read the description they didn't say or it wasn't clear what amp hour the battery was. The drill feels light and cheaply made for a Milwaukee. I own two Milwaukee 14.4 Power plus drills with 2.4 ah batteries and metal chucks and you can tell the difference in quality all the way around and are worth the extra $40 or $50 dollars. The drills are very close to the same size. Power and performance is good for what it is. I don't think it will last as long as my other Milwaukee drills.
I bought this for my boyfriend who is a sub-contractor and Mr. Fix-It around the house. He loves it! It keeps its charge, it has plenty of attachments, and I also purchased the extra bit set that he uses a lot too.
I've used many brands of drills over the years and this is the best I've had. It has a comfortable grip, good balance, lots of power and compared to my DeWalt cordless it seems to never need re-charging. Good product.
I wrote this several months ago: "This was a great drill as long as the batteries could be recharged. The first battery went out after one year, the second, after two years. Moderate household use, and I followed the manual's recharging instructions. A new 14.4v battery from Amazon costs $59. I have other cordless power tools, including another Milwaukee, and the batteries have been able to be recharged indefinitely. Something is wrong with the batteries that come with this tool." I gave the drill one-star.
Since writing that review in July, 2007, I contacted Milwaukee's tech service online, and the problem with one battery was corrected; I was sent a newer battery that seems to be working fine. I also bought another new-type battery from Amazon ($49). The drill has always worked well, with good power, weight, and strength. I change my review to 4 stars because Milwaukee has proved to be a conscientious company that responds to its customers complaints. Purchasers should read the "recharging batteries" instructions very carefully.
