Just purchased GPX's PDL 805 to play Region 1 and 2 DVDs. The product description specifies it will play both NTSC and PAL. It DOES NOT. I tried to get technical support from the seller (no luck) AND from the maker - GPX.com. GPX's technical support told me it will play European DVDs only when ... hooked up to a PAL TV! Needless to say I didn't get a portable DVD player to keep it connected to a TV. What a bunch of nonsense. Don't buy it if you want to play PAL DVDs.
The jacket which was supposed to fit my laptop model was too snug. When it finally closed, the zipper would tear open. I feel my money was wasted.
great way to carry your lap top in a back-pac...especially for a 17" lap-top computer...
The dvd player worked well for 1 hour. Then the picture failed totally. This is when the pain began. It took over a week to get a customer number to enable me to return the item Promised call backs never happened. Then I returned it and it has been more than 8 weeks. Last story was this model is no longer made and they are trying to decide what to replace it with. Again a promised call back never occured. The item still has not been replaced! I would stay away from magnavox / phillips at all costs.
I purchased this dvd player almost 2 months ago, and am very happy with my purchace. It has a great picture, good optics, good sound, but depending if there are loud noises, you may need headphones. I used my walkman headphones, and they worked just fine. I have a friend with a no name brand, and you can't basically hear it without external speakers, so this was a concern for me. The sound is suffient, at least for the size of the speakers. I can sit a good few feet away and hear it just fine. The charge lasts a really long time. Well, I never played it for more then 3 hours, but the charge still remained. Plus I always charge it up before I store it, and when I plugged the battery back on the machine after a month, it was still fully charged. It comes with a remote which is a nice feature as well. I felt it was a good choice for the money, I am happy with my purchase.
My husband bought me this DVD player for my birthday earlier this month. I fell in love with it. The screen is a great size, picture is crisp and clear, I had these awesome headphones that when plugged into this player made it sound as if I were in a movie theater.
I only give this 3 stars because it just gave out on me 2 weeks after I got it. I thought maybe it was the plug or battery or something but those weren't the issues at all. It was just that the player stopped working. I was extremely disappointed with this.
With a name brand like this I did expect a hell of a lot more than just two weeks of pure enjoyment. Maybe it was just my luck or something.
It didn't play and registered NO DISC with a brand new dvd installed. When I got one to work, it was fuzzy.
You have to put the volume at super duper high to even hear it.
it's pretty heavy, too. am going to return it.
The DVD's are very quite when played which was something I really wanted. I had purchased another player elsewhere and the sound of the dvd turning was so annoying I took it back. Great picture quality and sleek look as well. Well worth the price.
I bought this as a gift, and my wife loves it. Nice picture, good sound, and no problems so far. (She is pretty hard to please, and I hope she doesn't read this)
I now need a new battery for this player and I've found it near impossible to find a battery and when I did find one, it cost $80.00 plus shipping. That's a disappointment.
Can't get a break from the constant talking and laughing and questions of a reunion or get-together? Grab the 8" Portable LCD DVD Player with Car Kit and go out to the park. You're greeted with the quiet and soft sounds of the park. And, the only think to interupt this peacefulness? The sound of "Hang Em High" without any interuptions. Ah-hh what a way to spend Sunday afternoons.
The picture on this DVD player is not great - it's okay. The other problem we have is that the plugs do not have a good connection with the unit. My daughter was watching a movie one day in the car and there was a sudden LOUD squealing noise over the headphones. We never figured out what happened, however I suspect it could be the poor connection.
I was a little concerned when I read the negative reviews AFTER I had already decided and ordered this player. I've been using almost daily, playing movies,DVD concerts,Cd-R with photos of children and grandchildren. The multifunctions are great and with the headsets on, the concerts are superb, especially when you set the audio to digital surround. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but for the money with everything included I am very well satisfied. Ron in Pa.
PROS: All of the accessories that come with this DVD player are great the remote is cool. The swivel screen is very cool to i like how you can play cds and mp3 and all that kind of goodness. The two headphone jacks, the a/v in and out options is nice with the hook up to a tv set or monitor is a great idea too.
CONS: This Machine is very good all round the only downside to it is the picture quality. What I mean by that is that the LCD screen is liney what i mean by that is that you can notice the vertical line (at least I do). The other thing that i noticed is that you have to have the screen in the direction of you otherwise it looks as though the picture is too dark or whatever.
I love my sony DVPFX810R. The swivel screen is great. This versatile player is compatible with the following media formats: DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 and I have had no problem with any of hte formats so far. My only complaint would be the battery life.
great picture longest lasting battery i've ever seen just perfect but it is a x-mas gift and i only just tested to make sure it worked my son has one thats why i bought one just great love it.
harry d. reif age 64.
Bought this for xmass for my son and family to use on long trips. I will have to see how good it is after xmass. Came fast and looks very nice. Happy Holliday's.
This unit is not in stock and is not shipping. I have had my shipment delayed 4 times with no guarantee of receiving before Christmas. If you are ordering as a Christmas gift, do not order from Amazon. I have purchased many items from them and they have been terrible with this order and only after 4 delays they now tell me this item is backordered. I think it is only fair potential buyers know this before ordering. If I get my unit I will update this review. My original order was back on November 17th and I still do not have it and no date given after multiple discussions with customer service.
The main reason I purchased this player was to have a portable dvd player that has the "divx" playback feature (not mentioned in the US literature), but you can read about it at DIVX.com. It won't play .avi files, you have to rename them to .mpg to play them. So far I've been able to play mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4, xivd, divx encoded files. The player features are better than average. The remote is nice. The whole unit feels a little on the cheap side. I've had no real issues yet. I like this one better than my go-video player (it has a smaller lcd, at a lower resolution)
I received a new Toshiba SD-P2600 for Fathers Day Last year from my kids. After fourteen months of ownership and less than twenty five hours of use, the player would not turn on. This unit was manufactured in March, 2004. Since this unit is factory service only I mailed it to Toshiba. Several weeks later I was informed that the main board was burned out and the cost or repair was $466.00. That is in addition to the $70.00 to look for the problem. If I had it repaired the total cost invested in the unit would be $1,135.00. This total, of course, does not include the $49.00 I had to pay in shipping and handling to return it to me. Run, do not walk, away from this product. Just because the retail price may indicate that it is comparable to high end lines like Sony and Panasonic, the quality is more like the cheap lines sold at drug stores.
Nice little player, carries well, battery charges OK, but pity locked into region 1, no hacking codes yet, but plays region free discs OK. Speakers very ordinary, headphones are essential for listening. Never freezes, picture great provided you sit square on to the screen, peripheral image not good.
My wife and I bought this player for our kids (for long car trips) for Christmas 2004. We are both working professionals (teacher and policeman). This player started to freeze during playback from the very first dvd played. It got progressively worse over a period of 3 months. We only played excellent quality and brand new dvds in this player. It now freezes during almost every playback. A complete reboot (turning it off and then on) is required to get it going again. This "freezing" occurs when using the battery, the electrical cord or the car adapter...it makes absolutely no difference. We thoroughly read and followed the instructions before using the player for the first time. We also referred to the manual when we ran into this freezing problem, but no mention of a fix there. We contacted Toshiba USA and Toshiba Canada with negative results even though the player is in mint condition, under warranty and with all the accessories. Our advice to you...don't buy this model or any others from Toshiba.
This is an excellent player, with many nice features. The screen is sharp but, and this is a very big but, the viewing angles are so narrow as to render this almost unusable and is really unacceptable in today's world of LCD screens. It's a shame because the unit is well-designed and well-made. The inclusion of Component and S-Video outputs allows you to use it as player with larger screens which is a major plus but not enough to negate the narrow viewing angles. If the only way you plan on using it is sitting still on an airplane for several hours, you'll be happy. If you move around, or want to put it in the back seat of your minivan for 2 kids to watch, this is not the one for you-or them.
Apex Digital products often fail within the first year. They have horrible customer service, false advertising, and fail to honor their warranties. Please check www.labbb.gov (Better Business Bureau) and search for Apex Digital to see the F rating the better business bureau has given them. Saving 10-15 dollars is not worth the hassle they cause.
This DVD player looks great on paper and worked great for us...for about 20 videos of use. It just stopped working. I have read many other user reviews (mostly on CNET.com) of product failure. Think twice before choosing this poor quality machine.
I bought this for my son in 2004 and it does the job nicely. He doesn't care about hi-fidelity, so sound and picture quality isn't an issue. He has dropped the player a few times, but it survived. Overall I'm happy with it. It comes in handy when one kid wants to watch one show and the other wants to watch a movie.
I had this for 6 months before it stopped working in the middle of a movie. Wouldn't work at all. I called customer service and, after repeated attempts, eventually got through to them. To say that they weren't helpful would be a huge understatement, they actually directed me to buy a lens cleaner to see if that was the problem. It wasn't. They then told me it would be over $100 to repair. Instead, I opened it up myself and manually "fixed" it in about 5 minutes. Now it works great.
Will never buy from Go Video again though.
When I first bought this machine I was very happy with it. It worked great. However, about 9 months later the screen started malfunctioning. It was under warranty so I sent it in. Now OVER 4 MONTHS LATER I still don't have a replacement. To make matters worse customer service states they don't have visability into when I will get my fixed/replaced. Purchase from Go Video at your own risk.
the unit started malfunctioning shortly after it arrived. the display was faulty and couldnt see anything on it.but it gets worse!WHAT A LOUSY CUSTOMER SERVICE!.calling the 800 number is playing russian roulette.good luck if hold time doesnt exceed less than 20 minutes.i had the unit replaced for one of lesser value!now still waiting for the right one.3 months and counting.it is not worth my time to spend such long hours calling them.ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK should be their logo.
I actually bought three of these units for 5x per year car trips for my 5 children. Two of the units still work, although the battery life is not long (2 movies tops, if that). The third unit broke -- the little button that shuts off the player if the unit is closed is permanently depressed, so it never plays. I am not having much luck with customer service. The phone number for the portable DVD player support is permanently busy. I've sent an e-mail, but not much luck. I didn't save my receipt, so not sure this thing will be worth fixing. I purchased at Costco, so a return -- even if I had the receipt -- is out the question.
Very disappointed in this movie player. It has failed after 9 months of occasional use. It says no disc. I can't find my sales receipt from when I bought it and their website says I need it even if I had registered it orginally.
Trying a different brand now, hope it lasts longer.
I purchased a Mintek MDP-1815 portable DVD player on July 10, 2005. It was used somewhat infrequently, primarily on long car trips with my grandchildren. Occasionally, I loaned it to my daughter for her use with the grandchildren during their long car trips. It worked fine until about April 2006, when the battery [properly charged before the trip] "died" shortly after the grandchildren started watching a movie. During the next attempt to use the unit on a road trip [following an overnight charging], the unit played for one movie and then stopped function, even though it was plugged into the vehicle's 12-volt electrical outlet. I subsequently called Mintek on July 25, 2006 and talked to their Customer Service Department, at which time I told them that the unit's battery would not hold a charge and would not function in a vehicle, even when plugged into a 12-volt outlet. The customer service representative told me to send to Mintek the battery and a copy of the sales receipt, and they would send me a new battery. Having just moved from one state to another, I let a month lapse before sending the battery. I have now received a telephone call from Mintek telling me that they would not send a replacement battery, since I let "too much time lapse" before sending the defective battery to them. So their one-year warranty is being "strictly" adherred to, even though I had the problem start before the year had expired and was told by their representative that they would replace the defective battery. I feel like I gave them adequate justification to replace a defective product, but they do not stand behind their warranty. I will be returning the player to the store where it was purchased, and even if I do not get a refund the retailer will be aware that the Mintek product was sorely deficient. I will never buy another Mintek product.

For the money, this DVD player is fine, but it is definitely an entry-level player. I had bought a smaller Mintek (7") before that I was extremely pleased with. This player, although larger, is missing some of my favorite features present in the smaller player. My favorite feature in my old unit (which lasted for two years of extremely heavy use---say two hours daily) was the fast forward and fast backward. These multiply the speed each time you hit the FF or FB (first time is 2X, second time is 4X, etc.---all the way up to 32X). I had liked this because with the subtitles on, I could fast forward through boring parts of DVDs and still quickly read what, if anything, was going on. The fastest speed on this player has increased from 16X to 32X but you can no longer read the subtitles above 2X while the action is FF-ing so you no longer know what if you're missing something. Or you can FF really slowly at 2X. You have to watch the whole DVD.
This DVD player is part of a kit, coming with all accessories, cords, batteries, etc. so you only need to spend the purchase price. It comes with only one headset, though (instead of two headsets like the smaller version).
The picture quality is great, and I do enjoy the larger size screen. A small increment in screen size makes a HUGE difference!
Pretty much all of the functions of the player are on both the player and the remote. This is an improvement over the smaller version. As a side note, I have been using the remote from the old player on the new one, since it hasn't failed yet, with no problems.
This player seems as sturdy as the old one. It closes without a latch, just four silicone pads, two on the top and two on the bottom of the screen, but so far it hasn't fallen open. I'm pretty careful with it though, because my old one failed because of the many, many time I dropped it, especially the last time, which torqued the screen and almost separated it from the rest of the player.
You can't argue with the price, I just expected more and better, not less with a bigger screen. This wouldn't be a bad purchase, just not a great one.

Item arrived and screen did not work. Manual was completely useless. Called tech service at Mintek and voice mailbox was full so could not leave a message.
Like some of the other reviewers, worked great until a few months later and now the DVD's just spin with the loading icon displayed. A total and complete waste of money.
I purchased two of these DVD players and both of them have stopped working. My daughters used them each about 6 times on long road trips so they are like new. However, the last time we tried to use them, the DVDs would not load. You can actually hear the motor grinding and grinding. What a rip off! Audiovox will fix them for $93.00 each. I already spent close to $400 for two pieces of junk! Anyone ever try to report businesses like this to The Better Business Bureau or anything?
My daughter received this DVD player Christmas 2005. It seemed to work just fine for a few months. Then, one day it just seemed to be in an eternal "Loading" position. I bought a name brand DVD lens cleaner to see if that would rectify the problem. It did not. Thus, it is "loading".
I had this unit as a gift from my brother. Its been over a year now and had no problem with it what so ever. I use it almost everyday specially when i'm in bed and it is working just fine even with my back-up movies and my mp3 CDs. the battary can almost playes two movies or a one three hours movie when its fully charged. I even dropped it coupl times thnking there is no way its gonna work again but it suprised me. the down side of it is the sound quality comming from the built-in speakers which is a common thing in all Portable DVD players and for some reason the bottom of the player heats up and gets warm. I dont know if the same thing happens in all Portable DVD players or not. otherwise this is a good unit to invest your money in.
Purchased back in May 2005. Worked great for a few trips, even went overseas with it, then put it away for a few months. Going on another trip, took the player out, and when I insert a disc, it just spins and spins and spins, displaying "Loading disc" on the display. It never gets past this step.
I would definitely recommend anyone looking at this product to stay away.
I just owned this unit for a few days so I am unable to judge its long term reliability. I had one glitch right out of the box: the LCD screen was completely dark! I connected it to a TV and everything looked OK. After fiddling for a while then I finally found the culprit: the "line select" switch was kind of set in the middle. After moving it to the "out" position then the picture came up and there are no dead pixels. However, there is nothing mentioned in the manual about what's the exact funtion of this switch. In summary,
The Cons:
* Poor documentation.
* The vertical view angle is limited.
* Not S-video cable which requires a special connector.
* No "seek" buttons on the console.
* Display dot pitch is kind of big (the screen door effect)
The Pros:
* Versatile audio capability, good speakers.
* Works with DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW.
* Changeable region setting as mentioned in the previous review.
* The screen brightness, aspect ratio and color is easy to adjust.
* Relatively low price (from another vendor)
I purchased the 853, it's the same unit with an 8.5 inch screen. The first unit I purchased had bright red pixels all over. I took it back and exchanged it for the same model, the second one played the DVD for about 30 seconds and then choked. So I turned it off and back on again, but all it would do is say "Disc Unknown". I took it back for a full refund. This company makes the worst DVD players I have ever seen.
This player did not work. The screen went totally black within 10 seconds after putting the first dvd in it. It had sound, but no picture whatsoever. Had to return and did not buy it again. Went with a Mintek instead and it is working fine.
This is the worst electronic product I have ever purchased. Returned once to store, then the next three times to the company due to black and white bars at the top of the screen every time and had to pay them an extra $50. for the aggrivation. Now they think to appease me by sending me a model that is much cheaper than the one that I originally purchased. I have since read numerous reviews following the same problem. And to think, they continue to make this DVD player.
I've had this unit for about 2 months now and have never experienced the problems I've read on this site. What I like about the player is how light and portable it is..Not only can you use it in your car while traveling but you can move it to your other TVs in your house and hook up to the audio video input on your sets and your're ready to roll!! The picture is amazingly sharp compared to some of the other players I have seen and the screen is designed for widescreen DVDs..in other words the film fits perfectly in the screen!
It comes with a car adaptor and a really nice and thin remote control that works wonderfully! I highly recommend this unit!!
1700 model broke after 2uses..finally talked to human at mintek cutomer service, sent unit back got call from mintek that unit couldnt b fixed & send more cash for new one shipped free.
contacted BBB,filed complaint, manager from Mintek called after BBB contacted him & left a very nasty message on our voicemail..swearing at us.got new model after 3 plays the battery charger stopped working only plays with electric.
NEVER BUY MINTEK
They got sued back in 2/2007 read for yourself

I use this player for softball video playback. I have used both the SD card reader and the USB drive reader to playback video recordings to review with my softball players, it works great.
The SD reader also allows me to show digital pictures taken at family gatherings. Everyone with a digital camera uses it to show/review their pictures.
I have had the Mintek player for over a year and I have not had any problems with it.

I have been having trouble finding a portable DVD player with iPod dock that is compatible with my third generation nano. This one says that it is, but I called iLuv to double-check and the adapter that will make the videos play on screen will not be available until February or March of 2008. They also said something like the models made before October 2007 are the only ones that will be compatible with nanos, so be sure to check that out before you buy this to run your 3G nano.
The new jWIN i1155 is a great portable DVD player with a wide screen and quality sound. It reads all kind of Divx and DVD's, no problem until this point. One of the main attractive feature is the claimed integration with Apple IPOD's.
Well read this...
The iLuv i1155 is NOT compatible with IPOD classic 6th generation (the 80 GB or 160GB new models). The video screen will stay blue while the IPOD movie is playing, you can hear the sound, but no video. After an hour of struggling with combination of settings on IPOD device, I sent a ticket to jWIN support. I have just received the pathetic confirmation from Jwin Customer support that IPOD 6th Gen are not supported by Iluv i1155. I luv it no more...
This information is written nowhere, at least not on any resellers websites. This non-disclosure of supported IPOD models is a clear breach in the advertisment. It might work well with earlier IPOD's but ... I can't verify this.
So if you intend to buy this player along with your brand new IPOD, think twice. I am returning mine.

Bought this player just over 3 months ago and it started having problems where the screen wouldn't come on, but we were always able to get it going so we just assumed that it was a little buggy. Then about two weeks after the measly 90 day warranty went out the screen went with it. The screen doesn't come on at all now and when we called the support line they told us quite nicely that we were screwed and would have to buy another unit. Rest assured it will not be a Polaroid.
So if you have *ANY* problems with this unit, return it and ask for another one before it is too late.
Other than the screen going out I would not recommend this player for the following reasons:
You cannot change the Discs when you have it turned around to put in a car carrying case. In order to change the discs you must remove the power cable and remove the player from the case and open it up...then close it back, return it to the case and re-attach the power cable. Tedious.
Plus this unit has no battery memory. When it loses power (such as when you turn the car off to pump gas), it loses it's spot in the movie.
The only way to get to the player's setup menu is via the remote, so don't lose it if you are unfortunate enough to have purchased this unit.
The games are the equivalent of poorly done Atari 2600 games, and although they tell you that there are a bunch of games there are really only about 3 different kinds. Those 3 are just repeated over and over and over again with slightly different graphics.
If this DVD Player had not malfunctioned 30 days after use, it would get a 5 star rating. I recommend purchasing the replacement warranty from Target or Amazon for those "just in case" worries. Twist screens are the way to go so it can be angled just right. It also folds flat to hang on the back of the front seat! The sound in this DVD Player is loud and clear. The battery will charge in 5 hours and will play for 3 - 4 hours. There is a slight "motor running" sound but it isn't distracting for most. This player is great to hook up to your T.V. when you need a DVD player or to view pictures on a CD. The Problem: While watching a movie, it turned to a blue screen. I turned it off, then on, but still a blue screen. I tried the battery instead of the power cord; No go. "They" said it was a manufacturers defect and using my warranty, I get a full refund including shipping cost. Now, I'll get a different brand, "just in case". I like things to work for longer than 30 days or 26 movies.
