Reviews
it's o.k. don't understand it yet,but it's o.k."m m m it make a like of noise?"
This radar detector is definitely worth 100+ dollars. Also, unlike the Escorts and other brands, it sounds like you will have no problem returning this thing if it happens to break.

Many previous posts have said they did not detect police cars until they were about 1 block away.

I would like to point out that many patrol cars drive around constantly emitting Ka band radiation even though they are not manning a speed trap. Perhaps in this idle mode, the power of the Ka signal is a bit less than when they are trying to measure your speed. I don't know.

I was able to detect a patrol car at a drive through about 1/4 mile away and a cluster of 5 idling patrol cars at a crime scene at a distance of about 1/6 of a mile (both in the city).

I have not yet encountered a false Ka band signal. However, the X and K1 signals in the city cannot be trusted.
the detector is great the faults are the false alarms, RR alerts when no tracks anywhere in the area and in the middle of the woods getting KA alerts
This is a decent detector; but if you were looking for a cordless / battery powered detector this is not it!!! For some reason the detector has a battery power indicator (it's for an external battery like in a car not for internal battery like the product spec would lead you to believe). What the F&^@* my car has a battery indicator I don't needs a radar to tell me the condition of the car battery!!!
THis is a good detector, covers lots of bands. If you select POP detection it seems to give a lot of false warnings. Haven't tried the compass yet as I'll be switching cars soon and you have to set it up for each car you use it in. The viewing screen it colorful but a bit hard to read if your windshield slopes away too much. I think I would have bought the cheaper model had I tried this one first, but still it's a good detector.
Radar detectors have gone down in price over the years. A few years back I bought one for 200.00 dollars but if I had to do it again I would. Just like computers the price has dropped significantly but the technology is much better. The Cobra does go off near automatic doors, from my understanding these doors have a radar which tells them that someone is coming. However I also noticed the Cobra catches radars from several miles away so at times it seems like it's going off for no reason but I trust it when it does go off and slow down.

Good price, works good, lots of options, and warns about pretty much every detection system on the road. What more can you ask for?
Great product for a Great Price!!!

I bought this recently and i'm really impressed about it. Now i don't want to worry about the speeding tickets.
Don't bother getting a different radar detector this one does the trick. Plain and simple don't drive more than 10 (15 if you're a risk taker) and hit brakes as soon as the cobra starts chirping. Do this and you'll never get a ticket again.
I bought this product from Amazon about a month ago. I would not recommend this after my experience. I passed by several cop cars on the highway that clearly had radar turned on and the cobra did not alert me. Initially I thought the cop cars did not turn on their radar. However, I passed several electronic speed displays that are setup in neighbourhoods and highways that display speed based on a radar. I saw my speed displayed on the sign but this detector did not go off.

I have a Whistler in my other car and that works very well.
So far this detector only picks up false signals. Like they say, you get what you pay for.
The little box with a few lights arrived in good condition and on time which was the good bit. I fitted it in my car even though the lead is highly sprung and a bit short so it kept pulling out of the cigarette lighter hole especially when I went over bumps in the road. After pulling the lead tight and wrping it around the glove box door I managed to get enough slack on the wire to stop it pulling out and all was well. This weekend I went on a long journey and passed many stationary radars. At the first one the little box didnt give a peep but I still had hope as the radar might have been turned off. Passed another and another and still nothing. I got my wife to drive and tried removing the box from the mount and pointing it directly at the next radar incase my mounting was not right, still nothing. I tried using it in city mode because the piece of paper they laughingly refer to as instructions does not explain the difference between city and highway mode and still got nothing whatsoever. I reread the box and the 'instructions' to see if I was missing something but only found out how to stick the mount to the dash board and turn the thing on. I did notice that it said the box detects all types of radar gun, which could mean it only detects gun type radars and not the static boxes so I am waiting to see one of the mobile radars to test this but I'm not too hopefull. I will continue this review when I have tested this out but for static radars it is completely worthless which is why I refer to it as a box with little lights on it rather than a radar detector. TBC
I have had the box of lights for about 6 months now and have passed all manner of radars with it set up and plugged in pointing up the road. Not once has it done anything at all. I have tried it on city and highway mode as it does not explain what these actually are without any joy at all.
To sum up, this item is a rip off as far as I am concerned. I would like to have someone take it apart and see if there is anything inside it other than some LEDs and a buzzer.
If you are thinking of buying this piece of total garbage them take the $50 and give it to a poor person instead is my advice.
You can't go wrong with this radar detector for the price. I used to see patrol vehicles ahead of time, but never knew if they were running radar. Now I can often "see" them before I actually spot them. It has saved me in a school zone when I didn't even realize I had entered the school zone(I was doing 30 in a 20), so I can honestly say it has paid for itself.
Purchased this detector because the price was great. It appears to be a good starter detector. If you have the money would purchase detector that costs a little more. Haven't been by many police, but has alerted me to some and not to others... Overall, appears to be a decent detector, except the range could be better. Not sure if the range is even a mile.
I got a speeding ticket before I bought the laser. In Illinois if you pay a ticket and don't get another in ninety days the ticket stays off your record. This keeps your rates insurance down.
I have found that the device has a excellent range for the old fashion radar. It gives me plenty of time to slow down. Cop use the lasers in short burst, the device will warn me, but you have to pay attention. I think I was scan on by a laser on a highway and it was blocked. The cop never left his position.
If you happen to find yourself driving fast I think you need to stay away from other cars who may not be protected. Overall I think I drive slower now because I am more aware of my speed. I drive a 2005 GTO and it can fool you as to how fast your are going.

Have used the 9500i for about a month now, and appears to be a lot more sensitive than my "top of the line" Bell detector I bought 3 years ago. I still like Bell, but the GPS features of this unit made it a must have.

Pros:
* Wow!, I have detected constant scans, instant, and pop radars, sometimes a mile before I see the patrol car. I almost think I have a false scan, but when I see the patrol car I know the 9500i was not lying to me. (One time I got hit, so I shut it down, the guy behind me really didn't like that, so I let him by and he passed me like I was standing still, he got nailed, see, radar detectors can be fun).
* Allows you to see your speed on the detector, so you can use it as a "heads up" display.
* Allows you to lock out false signals from a certain area. (Nice, but see Cons).

Cons:
* A Lot more false scans than my Bell unit. On the upside, you can lock these out, so basically it's "trial and error" until you determine you have a false signal and decide to lock it out.
* At it's lowest brightness level, it's still to bright (compared to my Bell). I don't like advertising to everyone around that I have a radar detector, cops really don't like them, and will pull you over for something else if they can't get you speeding.

Note: If your alone on the road, speeding, and get scanned, there is no radar detector in the world that will save you. The cop units are good, some are very good. Your only hope is that when you detect a scan, the cop is scanning another vehicle, not you, if it is you, forget it, your getting a ticket. Just thought I would throw this in here if anyone thought radar detectors are a perfect solution.

Mythbusters did a whole show on these products. They do not work. Save your money.
I bought PhotoBlocker to avoid photo-radar tickets. And so far no tickets. What a product. It has paid for itself. Thanks guys
I am disappointed Amazon would even carry this product. Its sole purpose is to keep people running red lights from being caught. I consider it far worse than radar detectors in both principle and practice. At least a radar detector will get people to slow down for a bit, and running red lights is far more dangerous in my opinion than speeding. The only people who would buy this are people who run red lights regularly, and those people are idiots who really need to be stopped. Of course, as someone who was very nearly hit once by someone who just couldn't wait for the next green light maybe I'm a little biased on the side of using common sense.
Not sure how helpful this review will be, because I'm not totally sure myself. Any comments would be helpful. Here's the deal. I've had this detector since this past August. Each day I drive 140mi round trip to work & back, 90% is expressway, speed limit here in SE Mi is 70mph. During the time I've owned this detector I've passed many radar cops on the side of the road, my detector has alerted me exactly 2 times. I can't believe the many many cops I've passed where it didn't go off, that they had their radar turned off, just too many for me to believe that.

I sent the detector back to Escort saying somethings wrong, they send it back to me saying it's working fine. I know a few times I've blown by a radar cop about 78mph they didn't come after me (yes, detector did not go off). Maybe they have their guns set to above 80mph, I don't know. I sure don't want to test them.

All other features work great, the GPS is great, filtering out false signal is great.

Funny thing is, I've also got a higher priced Cobra detector, I get the same results with it. I think it's gone off about 2 or 3 times also, pass many cops where it does nothing.

Maybe the cops in SE Mi are using some secret undetectable radar (g):)

Any comments would be appreciated.
Escort Passport 9500i Radar and Laser Detector- Great detector, lots of abilities. Worth the extra $$$$$.

The first thing I want to say is that I ALMOST bought the passport 8500 because of what I read from one of the other reviews about a side by side test between the 9500i and the 8500. I read more about the topic and discovered that you can not compare the sensitivity of radar detectors by sticking both of them on your windshield and driving down the road. When they are that close to each other, they interfere with each other.

Boy am I glad I got the 9500i. The GPS functionality is great and I have blocked out all the false alarms on the usual routes I travel. So easy to do it, just hit the mute button on the device or the smart cord three times and you never have to hear that false alarm again. Sweet.

This thing has great range too. It picked up radar up to 5 miles away from one particularly well hidden detector along the Ohio turnpike.

Also, with the GPS function, it displays the speed you were going when you got "pinged" with the radar, so you can tell if you need to slow down or not. I know what you are thinking, but just because the detector is going off doesn't mean that someone with a radar gun can tell your speed. For a radar gun to detect speed, it must hit your vehicle then bounce back. This is only good for a mile at the most and under prime conditions. The detector just has to pick up the radar reaching it, so it can pick up from much farther away.

When you first get the alarm, it is usually with one bar on the detector. You can safely slow down (No slamming on the brakes) before you pass the radar source and the 9500i will keep you informed about how strong the signals are.

Another great thing about the GPS function, you can mark those pesky vascar spots. See, vascar doesn't use radar...so with any other detector, you are not protected when you pass over the white lines on the road. With this device, you can mark that spot so you know where it is next time, and it will warn you that it is coming in the appropriate amount of time depending on your speed. Sweet again.

The only down side that I can find in the 9500i after taking it around where I live and down the highway about 20 hours worth is that when the first warning shows up you can never be sure if it is a false alarm or not. You have to wait and see if it goes up high, or just stays a low signal...false alarms are almost always low signals. However, once you pass that low signal and it goes out of range, you can not...after the fact...still mark it as a fake signal to be blocked. It would have been nice if the device would allow you to still mark the most recent alarm a minute or two after you pass it. Obviously, you can mark it the next time past, but I'm just saying.

Mounts easy, comes with a nice case, extra suction cups, smart cord is awesome, and the dark feature (audio only, no light) can't be beat at night.

Overall, a GREAT device, can't recommend it enough. It has already saved me a ticket and I've only had it 2 weeks. Paid for itself.

p.s. Just so you know, radar detectors are legal in pretty much the entire country except for a few states (as long as you don't have a commercial driver's license). You can read about it on the Escort website.
I bought the 9500i and also the Valentine One, intending to use them both and send back the one I didn't like. The 9500i went back today. The GPS lockout feature is useful and innovative, but as a detector this unit does not work well.

False alarms for laser are a daily occurrence, usually just as I turn a corner to face into the sun. The thing will screech, and before the voice-over comes in, I've taken to saying to myself, "Bright Sunlight Alert!"

The radar detection is not as good as on the V1, and lack of a rear antenna (to provide directional data) in my opinion is a critical flaw.
I think Escort has done a great job with this detector. They are using cutting edge technology to bring us the consumers the latest and greatest. Nothing is ever going to be full proof, but the 9500i does a pretty darn good job. The GPS is a very cool feature and it is very easy to operate. I would recommend this detector to anyone I know! I think it's the best money can buy period.
Excellent radar detector - minumal false alarms, and accurate estimates of radar strenght (as far as I can tell). I'm wondering what additional functionality the more expensive Cobra detectors posess. It seems you pay for items like voice warnings and a compass, and not anything substantive that helps keep you from getting in to hot water.

I'd have given this model 5* except for one flaw - the silver colored pieces on the top of the detector reflect off the windscreen. This can be quite intrusive when the sun is low in the sky. Otherwise, I can't find fault with this model.
I purchased this detector because of the recent speed traps around here. I now have had it 1 month - When I 1st got it I was at a major intersection the lights on top of the stoplights (for emergency vehicles) Was blinking singling a vehicle was coming this device did not recognize the emergency vehicle until it was literally next to me!! A week later I pulled up next to a cop car and the detector didn't blink until I was once again next to him. Another major flaw is the fact it is supposedly setup for some radar currently used in England K something - That is the only signal that has ever went off - generally false or way to late. Do not waste your time - Before it beeps your already staring down a ticket- Save your money for your ticket.
Easy to use with clear directions; can't comment on range. Suction cups are black instead of clear. Seems it would be better to have clear especially since it is supposed to pick up laser that would be blocked by opaque objects in front of unit.
I have now had this detector for three months. I purchased it because I have to go through a speed trap (speed unposted and the legal speed is only 25) to get to work. In that time I have encountered about twelve times there was a cop there with a radar/ laser - the Cobra 9430 detected TWO of those times. The only thing it seems to detect are automatic doors at stores, which it is very good at. I strongly suggest you purchase a different detector!
This is a pretty nifty gadget. My last radar detector was a cobra as well which would go off all the time with false alarms. This one goes off less, but seems to be a little more accurate than my last radar detector. The woman's voice is easy to listen to, and a lot better than hearing an irritating beeping noise all the time.
I have had this detector for few weeks now, and I am very happy with it. Though many things around town can set it off, such as store security systems, electronic crosswalk systems, and a few others, it has been very useful for my interstate driving as well as in town. The auto-mute function is an awesome feature.
This product is simply amazing as long as you are aware. I have had it detect KA band from 2 miles away, from the other side of the hill. It does give a lot of false positive, especially the X, K, and SPECTRE bands. I'd recommend turning X off in general.

The false positives are usually things like radar controlled bill boards(like those lotto ad's that show the current jackpot), automatic doors, and some electronic traffic signs will set this off.

But if you pay attention, and think about where cops like to hide, you won't ever get pulled over. I went from 5 tickets in 1 year, to none in 2 years now. Definately worth the money!
Great value for the price.
I also had the chance to test it and it spotted all the radars. Also I had a lot of false alarms but I guess I need to deactivate some of the alerts!
We purchased this product before our recent trip. It worked great. The warning time was adequate and the volume was not too loud. The only thing that we were suprised that the detector did not do is talk to you to warn of upcoming radar. The detector just has a series of beeps to advise you of radar. Overall we are very pleased with the product.

I purchased this product to replace a Whistler I have had for 2 years. This gives many more false signals as the Whistler at a higher price. I went back to my old one and put this in a vehicle I do not drive very much. This does have a lot of programming options, but in my opinion it is not as accurate as the competition.
I am pretty satisfied with this radar..The price was cheaper than most, and it works...A few times cops have been staked out, and it didn't pick up a signal, but maybe they weren't using radar...I don't know...but this works great...
THE XRS9830 12 RADAR-LAZAR DETECTOR DOES EVERYTHING YOU WOULD WANT TO HAVE IN THE BUSY CITY OR ON THE HIWAY. THE FIRST TIME I USED THE DETECTOR IT PICKED UP EMERGENCY VEHICLES EVEN BEFORE I HEARD THE SIRENS. I HAVN'T USED IT ON THE HIWAYS YET BUT AFTER READING ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS I AM SURE IT WILL BE FINE. THE ONLY DOWN SIDE I CAN SEE IS THE COMPASS. IT IS NOT 100% ACCURATE ACCORDING TO THE COMPASS IN MY INFINITY.
I have used this radar detector for over a year now. It is the best detector in this price range. Be sure to read the manual completely as it is necessary to turn on some of the bands in city mode. When I started using it every day I quickly learned where the false alarms are. Rouge warnings are the ones to look out for. The Laser warning has gone off several times (in fact the alarm will really get your attention) but with laser once you pick up the signal, you're probably nailed. The emergency vehicle warning works, but not very many emergency vehicles have the transponder necessary to activate the warning. My detector has been very durable, it seems to get really hot sometimes with the sun beating on it, but it has never failed to work. Sometimes it's hard to see the screen in bright light, but the audio warnings make up for that. I like the voice warnings because it tells you the type of radar it's picking up, so you don't have to look at the unit to find out. At one time or another it has picked up each type of radar advertised and each has a different audio alert. Intellimute is nice feature. I don't use the compass.

I look forward to the day when I can buy an expensive detector and do a side by side comparison, but overall I would say if you pay close attention to the settings and keep in mind what a radar detector can and can not do for you, this is a good choice for the money.

It was good while it lasted. I had this item for 30 days and it stopped working. I am going to return it for a new one.
Good product. The ship was really fast. Everything as described in the sale. Brand new sealed detector.
I WOULD PREFER "IDIOT LIGHTS" TO ALERT WHEN THREATS ARE FAR OR NEAR vs. FLASHING LETTERS OF RADAR BANDS. OTHERWISE, THIS PIECE IS TOP OF THE LINE TECHNOLOGY. ALSO, I SAVED APPROX $50 SO I CAN'T REALLY COMPLAIN. A MUST BUY FOR "LEAD-FOOT" DRIVERS LIKE MYSELF!!!
Accurate and well worth the money. Only cons is that the visual alerts are somewhat small and not very helpful. The audible alert should have more different tones for different types of radar and a better visual alert to accompany it - overall it is well worth the $70 I paid for it
I owned this for 1 1/2 years but it was stolen, got a VERY expensive Cobra and it lasted 3 months before it went off all the time (sitting in driveway, etc)
This unit captured radar AROUND corners!! I had it go off before I could even see where the locals were at.
If you need a good, low priced , reliable unit, this is the one to get.
PS I don't know how the laser works as they don't run that type of radar in Illinois or Missouri. (that I know of)
I got this product thinking that it would be a great radar detector for $85, and it is. However, having occassionally used a Passport 8500, this radar detector is a major letdown. You can't choose an automatic mode--you must choose between City modes or a Highway mode. Additionally, the detection gives you very little warning...maybe 1000 feet at best for a cop using Ka on the highway (that will get you a ticket).

So, if you don't fly, but like to go 5-10 MPH over the speed limit and feel the need for a detector, then this is the detector for you. But if you like to go faster than that, then this detector will not be of any use to you.
I've owned this item for approximately 6 months, and it's the best investment that I've made in a while! I've found it very reliable, and cost effective...especially since I now know when radar is directed my way...in time for me to do something about it, and not get stopped/ticketed!
I highly reccommend this item. It is well-worth the purchase price.
The XTR-325 was very easy to set up. The included instruction manual completely explained not only how the device worked, but also how the technology worked and interacted with police radars.

The voice warnings are great, because you will get used to hearing different warnings when going by stores with automatic doors. When you hear the voice say that same type of radar everytime instead of just beeping, you'll get used to it. When you drive by that same type of store and hear a different type of radar, you know to slow down.

Overall, I feel more safe from police radar while using this device and it is convenient to use.
This product does not pick up radar detectors until the patrol car is within 50 feet of it. Not sensitive enough. The only reason this I gave this products 2 stars instead of 1 is that it does go off but not with enough time to slow your speed.
well the radius is not far so you wont be able to go
to fast and you have to react directly after it goes off.
But most of the time it is a false alarm ( it always goes off
when i pass walmart or cvs, i guess it is their doors that
give out the false alarm)
well but i guess it is alright for the buck.
i mostly use it on the highway, in the city ( even though
it has the city or highway option) i usually have it
turned off cause the signal gets annoying after a while
Not the greatest RD out there (many recommend the Escort 8500, 9500, or Valentine V1 as the top picks), but for the price, what can you expect. You can expect some false alarms, mediocre sensitivity, and some basic features and adjustments. I bought this for the ability to do away with a cord (making the RD a bit larger and heaver), and an included charger that you can take with you on trips in addition to the car cord is a very nice touch. In spite of its sensitivity (or, lack of filtering out false alarms from various sources), it does alert me to real law enforcement measurement devices. Since I use this simply for informational purposes (I rarely travel > 5 MPH over the legal limit), this is fine. For those who wish to daringly exceed posted, lawful limits on a regular basis, I suggest a higher-rated device -- for hundreds $ more, naturally.
For the price, this radar detector is awesome. No wires, comes with battery/car charger, numerous settings. Costs less than a ticket and will quickly pay for itself.
It is a bit large and defintely on the heavy side as far as radar detectors go, but I really hate having a cord hanging in front of me. Works like a charm and if the batterys go out you can plug it in and charge them as you drive.
Came with 4aa batteries and a charger, and a power cord. What a deal!
This thing has sniffed out everything around me......I don't speed on purpose......but when I'm doing 38 in a 25 this thing warns me of the township's money maker trap.....unsafe driving in NJ is $439!!! It's a good safety net. The window suction cups really do suck.....but I found that if I put it above my rear view mirror and let most of the weight rest on the mirror, everything is fine. Velco to the dash is another option to consider.
I like this puppy....if your a race car driver, look at the $400 to $500 detectors
This is my first radar detector. It does what I want it to do when I want it to do it. It picks up police radar and static radar trailers easily from a distance. The detector did not sound off when I passed through the new laser radar, but I may not have been hit by the beam.
It is one quick move to take the unit off the mount and to put it back on. The latch inside the detector that holds it to the mount will wear out fast. Velcro a piece of thick foam rubber under the front of the detector to support it on the dash. It is easy to recharge the batteries in the unit while you drive. The Highway and City modes allow me to filter out false alarms. I like the snooze detector for long trips. The display is easy to see unless you have a light colored dash that reflects light during the day. Put a black piece of felt on the dash in front of the detector.

I do not have any other detectors to compare side by side for an accuracy competition, but this one does the job that I need it to do. The control buttons are fast and easy to use while driving. It does not pick up radar from the sides, but this should lower false alarms and I usually do not speed in a sideways direction.

You may only have a second or two to react when going head on with a patrol car using mobile radar because your combined speeds are about 140 mph.
This was a gift and I do know how accurate this unit is on picking up the signals
This product works ok. Seems to pick everything up and what I mean is it goes off every other minute. I feel it's bulky in size and looks like it would be an older model.
For the price of the radar detector, I'm extremely impressed. From it's features to its accuracy it has been a great product. I have been successfully warned multiple times now, well ahead of police vehicles coming towards me on the opposite side of the road with their speed radars turned on. I use the "City 1" mode which nearly eliminates false alarms that normally occur X-band while driving around in a normal city environment. When the detector alarms, I know that it can be trusted. I highly recommend this radar detector.
While this does not have the radar range of the top-3 detectors, (unlike Cobras) it has been adequate. Laser detection is top notch though.
I didn't expect voice being a nice feature, but it enables you to know the radar band quickly and without looking at the detector. I would definitely recommend this feature to everyone.
False alerts are normal for it's price range (read close to no filtering). Radar detectors are not very useful (read quiet) in cities ;)
Interestingly enough, the microwave front end of the XTR-560, XTR-425, XTR-325, Pro-73, and Pro-58 are the same, and their algorithms similar. Thus, they have the same performance, but different features / display / warranty.
Finally, as far as I've heard, their customer support is excellent.
I bought this as a gift my better half. I decided on this model because it has all the features you could ask for. The POP detection is a definate plus. And it also has a detection for what they use in Europe right now and soon to be in the States. I figured this way I wouldn't have to buy a new one when it does. You can't go wrong with the price for what this model has to offer.
This radar is fine for a $99 price. My only complaint is that it does go off alot becuase of other peoples radar, more so than I had expected. Its probably already saved me a couple tickets though so its paid for itself. Like I said, for $99 its a good deal....

This unit gives far too many false alarms, and sometimes no alarm when it should. I stashed this away as a backup and paid for a very good detector which only works when it is supposed to. The first Cobra detector I had lasted about 6 years and worked fine. I don't know what happened to the quality.
It really has gone off ahead of time when a Cop has his Rader out! I have driven by Cops and it hasn't gone off but I noticed that it is because they do no have their Radar out! It has saved me from a few tickets so far, I love it! It works great! Although It does go off anytime I am near an automatic opening door a lot but thats just a minor distraction compared to all the money this detector has saved me! I recommend it!
This was a great deal. No hazzle and the product was shipped in no time.
I stopped keeping track after this radar detector paid for itself four times over by alerting me of traffic cops hidden late at night. I would absolutely have stopped for speeding every single time. I've gotten one ticket since then by a cop who SAID he tagged me with a laser, but I think he was lying since the detector didn't go off, and it alerted me of a laser radar in the past. It does go off a lot when there isn't a police radar around, but not for very long. To me that is a minor inconvenience. I just don't turn it up so lound that it drives me crazy. I can't say how it stacks up against more expensive products, but since it's saved me more than $600 in tickets, I'd say it is a very worthwhile investment.

I received a Cobra XRS 9300 rader detector for Christmas and was disapointed to learn that something in my car generates a constant Ka band signal of varying strength.

It beeps constantly so long as the car is running. If you have a 2002 Nissan Maxima, do not buy this radar detector. It won't function in this car. I would not buy any radar detector in the future except from a dealer that would accept an open item return in the event that the product is so poorly engineered.

Steve
I purchased a Cobra radar detector, the 3 times it went off i was aprox 1 block from the cop, the reason i purchased this model was it was said to have a 2 to 3 mile range, NOT
So i called the Cobra manufact. and they told me to return it to them, cost of shipping UPS was $15.00
It has not been returned yet, but it was new and in sealed box, but not what i expected. Had I bought it from Radio Shack or Best Buy i could have returned it for another one
It's about as good as it's going to get if you expect this to be comparable to the Escort X50 It's not so if you expect that type of accuracy look towards a higher costing Cobra Detector. Overall the Emergency vehicle detection system really does work and has alerted me numerous times. I have a story to tell you about it. I was driving to see a friend I live in Anne Arundel County Maryland and my friend lives in Montgomery County MD. I was on a country two lane road in Montgomery County and the emergency vehicle alert system went off and alerted me a good two minutes before the ambulance was close to me. So it gave good enough warning and I had time to pull off the road to let the amublance roll by me.
It does not pick up laser. I got a ticket after 5 days!
